The UK is not one uniform market for food law. Great Britain (England, Scotland, and Wales) operates retained EU law as amended domestically, with the Food Standards Agency and local authorities. Northern Ireland continues to apply EU food law under the Windsor Framework. A product sold across the UK may need to satisfy both.
The framework in brief
Food supplements regulations
The Food Supplements (England) Regulations 2003 and corresponding regulations in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland provide the framework. As in the EU, botanical ingredients are not covered by a single harmonized positive list, and enforcement practice can vary.
Novel foods
The novel food framework continues in GB with UK registers and authorizations, while Northern Ireland follows the EU regime. A botanical extract that is authorized or listed in one system is not automatically covered in the other.
Contaminants and pesticide MRLs
GB maintains its own contaminant and MRL positions, which may diverge from the EU over time. The destination and the route to market determine which register to check. Do not assume an EU-compliant certificate automatically satisfies a GB requirement.
Health claims
GB has its own register of authorized health claims. Claims authorized in the EU are not automatically usable in GB without checking the GB register. The same principle applies in reverse.
Labeling and enforcement
Labeling follows UK food information rules, with local-authority enforcement. Allergen and ingredient declarations must reflect the actual grade, including carriers.
Documents we can supply
The exact pack depends on the grade, the application, and your customer's requirements. These are the documents that typically travel with a botanical extract lot.
- Batch COA and specification
- Contaminant and pesticide results matched to the GB or NI route
- Allergen, GMO, and origin statements
- Residual solvent and microbiological results as agreed
- Organic certificate where an organic claim is made
What your team still needs to confirm
Confirm whether the product will be sold in GB, NI, or both.
Check the GB novel food register and, for NI, the EU regime.
Verify health claims against the GB register.
Confirm the contaminant and MRL limits for the route to market.
Check local authority notification or enforcement practice where relevant.

Not legal advice
This page is a business-to-business orientation, not a legal opinion. Ingredient status, permitted claims, limits, and notification duties depend on the specific extract, dose, finished product, and current rules. Confirm with a qualified regulatory advisor in the destination market before launch.
