In detail
Mesh size affects flowability, blending, capsule filling, suspension, and mouthfeel. An 80-mesh powder is common for capsule blends; a 200-mesh powder may be needed for a smooth drink or a fine dispersion. The relationship between mesh and micrometres is approximate and varies with wire diameter and the standard used.
Particle size should be a release parameter, not an afterthought. A lot that is coarser than the specification can segregate in a blend or feel gritty in a beverage. Ask for the mesh or micrometer range and the test method, and request a sample if mouthfeel matters.
Why it matters to a buyer
- It affects whether a powder flows on a capsule line or cakes in a drum.
- It changes suspension and mouthfeel in beverages.
- Particle size can segregate in a blended formula if it differs between ingredients.
What to ask a supplier
What mesh or micrometre range is standard, and what is the tolerance?
How is particle size tested — sieve or laser diffraction?
Can you provide a finer or granulated grade for our process?
